Badagry Residents Protest Harassment, Extortion by LASBCA Officials

INSIDEMAINLAND – Residents of Candid Estate, Araromi near Okoafo, Badagry, Lagos Mainland have raised concerns over the state government demolishing their buildings.

It was revealed that the Lagos State Building Control Agency was responsible for carrying out the destruction (LASBCA).

According to residents, the LASBCA and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration did not provide them a quit notice before the demolition operation and added that they were being harassed by policemen, soldiers, and hoodlums.

A resident, who spoke based on anonymity said, “LASBCA served us quit notice on December 7, 2022, and started demolishing properties of residents on 8th December 2022. There was no prior notice not court order.”

“This is a state where we give vent to democracy and justice. You rendered homeless those you have sworn to protect. Our leaders run an elitist government and show no mercy to the masses.

“They care not about what will be left of them. The agency terrorized civilians and deployed thugs in hundreds and state police to destroy the hard-earned property of people.

“They came to the community on the 7th of December. They were in large numbers, which consisted of hundreds of thugs with guns and other weapons. They were escorted by some police officers and men in army uniforms.

“They spoke no to anyone but marked every building for demolition. The community executives met with them that same night to know what wanted. They gave different accounts that somebody had bought the land 80 years ago while they also claimed the lands are acquisition lands.

“The following day, they started demolishing houses and those that could afford to pay them were spared. That was the case for two days until the agency that supervised their actions told them to pull back given the directive of the Lagos state government. Now, the government claimed not to be aware of such, yet they disbanded the Lagos state building agency control.”
