More Woes For Embattled Actor, Baba Ijesha

INSIDEMAINLAND – The Special Offences Court in Ikeja on Wednesday, dismissed the post-conviction bail request made by the detained Nollywood actor James Olarewaju, commonly known as Baba Ijesha, awaiting the outcome of his appeal at the Court of Appeal.

The motion was denied by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo because Baba Ijesha did not meet the requirements to justify the bail.

The judge concluded that the applicant must indicate an exception because the five-year term granted to him is to run simultaneously.

She claimed that there is no proof that the appeal has been filed and that there is no reason to believe that the court won’t handle the issue quickly.

The troubled actor is requesting bail in appealing his five-year sentence for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl.

In accordance with Section 6(6) of the 1999 Constitution as adjusted and Section 51 of the High Court Law of Lagos State, administration of criminal justice law, Baba Ijesha’s attorney, Gabriel Olabiran, told the court on August 10 that notice for bail pending appeal had been filed.

The motion was taken before the court, according to Olabiran, since it was challenging to secure a date at the Court of Appeal.

In a counter affidavit dated August 18, the state’s attorney for the prosecution argued that the defendant had failed to prove any unique circumstances that may allow the convict to be released on bail.

The court sentenced the troubled actor to five years in prison on July 14 for sexually abusing a child who was 14 years old.

The court upheld the prosecution’s case against the convicted person on the charges of sexual assault and indecent treatment of a minor.

Meanwhile, Justice Taiwo cleared him of counts one and six, which involved sexual assault by penetration in 2014 and an attempted sexual assault by penetration in 2021, and released him from further prosecution.
