BREAKING: FG suspends Twitter’s operations
INSIDEMAINLAND – The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.
This was made known by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement issued on Friday.
In addition to the suspension of Twitter, the government also directed the National Broadcasting Commission to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
The suspension is coming on the heels of Twitter deleting President Muhammadu Buhari tweets on Tuesday wherein he threatened to unleash terror on those clamouring for secession.
In the tweet shared on Tuesday, Buhari had said he would treat Nigerians misbehaving in a language they understand.
He recounted happenings during the civil war and threatened to deal with those “bent on destroying” Nigeria through “insurrection.”
“Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand,” he had said.
The tweet was greeted with outrage and castigation, with many wondering why such hard line and threat was not directed at Boko Haram and bandits wreaking havoc in the country. Many also reported the tweet and asked Twitter to suspend the president’s account.
Following the uproar and widespread condemnation, Twitter deleted the message on Wednesday.
However, Nigerians on the bird app has decribed the Federal Government decision as an act of dictatorship.
