A broadcast journalist with Arise News, Adesuwa Omoruan, has said the Local Government chairmen in Lagos state are underperforming.
In a tweet, the co-host of the Arise Morning Show appealed to the governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to set targets for the LG chiefs and reward or sanction as applicable.
“Dear Governor @jidesanwoolu with 20 LGAs, it is impossible for you to be everywhere even if you had super powers! Can we have conversations about the LGA chairmen? For too long, they have earned salaries without deliverables! Perhaps we can set targets & reward/name & shame,” she said via @adesuwaomoruan
This public outburst is coming at a time when the calls for Local Government autonomy is getting louder.
Reacting to the post, Dr. Anita Mudiaga, who tweeted via @fav_eyedoctor, said: “How can we scream this more? Half of the people in the local government don’t even know who the chairman is. We can’t hold them accountable for anything. All they do is drive Lexus with customized plates. And when we are done with them let’s talk about our house of reps.”
Another Twitter user, Nedu Madiebo (@pacman0000) also reacted, saying, “I beg to differ. Our Governor can be everywhere if he so desires. Dat’s Y wat we call oversight function. Unscheduled visits to see the issues, progress being made and Finished jobs upon completion will put LG Chairmen on their toes. Non performance will attract stiff sanctions.”
“Thank you @adesuwaomoruan. Part of our governance problem is a refusal of Governors to allow LGs to be.They, behaving like emperors want all the glory. They talk about need for devolution but keep grabbing away the powers and responsibilities of LGs. Pure Egotism,” Magnus submitted in his comment.
