Some of the finest football stars from the African continent including legendary Cameroonian forward, Samuel Eto’o Fils will storm the Soccer Temple, Agege, Lagos Mainland, for a classic match billed to hold on Saturday, May 18, 2019.
The Match, a ceremonial game in honour of Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, earlier scheduled to hold at the Onikan Stadium, was moved to the Agege Stadium by the organisers. This is in connection to the ongoing repair works at the Onikan Stadium which is nearing completion.
According to the organisers of the event, the game which will feature an African Legends side versus Naija Legends is aimed at celebrating the sporting achievements of the Ambode administration in Lagos.
Commenting, Waidi Akanni, one of the organisers of the event, confirmed that the shift to Agege Stadium was because of the construction work at the Onikan Stadium, which he said was not likely to be completed before the date of the game.
“We really would have been happy to play the African Legends versus Naija Legends match for Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at Onikan but we do not want to take any chance now that it is obvious it will not be ready. Agege Stadium is a better alternative,” he said.
The former Chairman of the Lagos State FA also confirmed that flight tickets have been sent to the invited former African stars listed to take on their Nigerian counterparts.
Akanni said; “The African stars include – Richard Kingston, (Ghana), Geremi Njitap (Cameroon), Herita Illunga (DRC), Christian Karembeu (France World), Aaron Mokoena (South Africa), Didier Zokora (Ivory Coast), Mamodu Sissoko (Mali) and El- Hadji Diouf (Senegal).
“Others include Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon), Diomansy Kamara (Senegal), Khalilou Fadiga(Senegal), Abdul Kader Kaita (Senegal), James Debbah (Liberia ) and Tiene Siaka (Ivory Coast).”
In addition, former World Footballer of the Year and Liberia President, George Weah, is expected to make a cameo appearance at the game.
