Why Buhari’s planned Lagos campaign rally may cause hardship on Mainland roads

Ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign rally billed to hold in Lagos on Saturday, February 9, 2019, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has released the president’s itinerary for the one-day campaign.

Most of the routes scheduled to be used b the President cuts across the Mainland which may result in a lockdown of those areas leaving motorists to go through alternative routes.

Recall that on Thursday, March 2018, the President visited Ikeja, Lagos Mainland, for the commissioning of the ultra-modern Ikeja Bus Terminal. During the visit, roadblocks were mounted on various routes which caused major traffic across the state.

According to media reports, many people left their homes as early as 3:00am to beat the roadblocks but it was unsuccessful. At the time, there was also a spike in bus fares leaving Mainlanders to suffer untold hardship.

InsideMainland gathered that domestic flight operations were also disrupted nationwide due to the restriction of movement on some major routes in Lagos. The restriction, which began as early as 3:00 a.m., left a lot of the local and international passengers stranded and unable to catch their morning flights. The development forced local carriers to delay all morning flights out of Lagos for hours, causing a ripple effect on connecting flights in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and Enugu among other airports across the country.

Apart from the delays, some of the airlines flew at half the load factor to avoid cancellation, which cost them in millions.

The President’s Saturday campaign rally may be a re-enactment of the March 2018 episode.
