There was pandemonium at SkyPower Ground, Ikeja GRA, Lagos Mainland, venue of the official flag-off ceremony of the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier today, Tuesday, January 8, 2019, as sporadic gunshots allegedly fired by security operatives led to people scampering for safety.
According to sources, trouble started when some thugs suspected to belong to different factions of the National Union Road and Transportation Workers (NURTW) engaged in brawl at the venue of the flag-off.
To disperse the crowd, the security operatives reportedly fired sporadic gunshots into the air which led to people running for safety.
During the shootings, a community media practitioner and publisher of Ijoba Ibile TV was reportedly hit by a stray bullet. InsideMainland also learnt the Master of Ceremony for the event was hurt in the incident.
InsideMainland cannot independently verify the reason for the brawl between the factions of the Union. However, sources revealed that the incident started at the time Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was delivering his remarks.
In addition, it was gathered that apart from the shooting, crisis still degenerated with both sides of the feuding gangs throwing bottles, stones and other dangerous weapons during the fight.
Also, a leader of the NURTW, MC Oluomo was stabbed in the chaos leading trouble between the factions.
Speaking on the development, a source said; “the organization of the event was poor especially security wise. The police ought to have contained the situation and why allow it to happen when Governor Ambode was giving his main address?”
The source added that the several others sustained varying degrees of injuries due to the struggle to avoid being caught in the brawl.
Meanwhile, it was gathered that while some of the hoodlums who were behind the chaos were arrested were dragged into police vehicles by the operatives present.
