Few days after the boat accident that claimed five lives including an expectant lady at the Ikorodu end of Lagos Mainland, investigations have revealed the cause of the boat accident.
Recall that in the boat accident which occurred on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, five people lost their lives while five others were rescued when a 20-passenger boat capsized mid-way from Ebute Terminal, along the Lagos – Ikorodu Expressway.
Commenting on the development, the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Tiamiyu Adeshina, said that the mishap was caused by panic, which resulted when the commuters realised that the boat was leaking.
“From the information available to us, the mishap was caused when commuters in the boat realised that it was leaking and water was rushing inside. They started struggling to get off and in the process, some fell into the sea.
“Those who were wearing life jacket panicked and jumped into the sea, but what they had on wasn’t the standard recommended by LASEMA,” he said.
Speaking on regulating the industry, Tiamiyu said that there is the need for proper monitoring of operators of ferry services.
InsideMainland gathered that the capsized boat is operated by Blue Boat Marine and usually operates the Marina Jetty to Ikorodu Terminal route.
