There was apprehension among residents and shop owners in Alimosho community, Lagos Mainland, earlier today, as officials of the Lagos State Government (LASG) stormed the area to demolish structures.
InsideMainland gathered that the properties demolished were located along Moshalashi bus stop, few meters away from the popular Gowon Estate, along Egbeda-Idimu road, Alimosho.
Sources told InsideMainland that some of the properties had been earlier marked for demolition by the government.
While the officials demolish the structures, some of the worried shop owners reportedly struggled frantically to salvage some of their belongings left in the shops.
A source said the government had earlier issued a notice stating that the shops would be demolished to aid rehabilitation of roads and other construction works in the area. “Before now, there was a notice from the government that the shops would be demolished. Some leaders in the community argued that the properties were built there illegally,” the source said.
However, this is the second time in less than two months that the government would demolish properties on the Mainland.
Recall that the Ile-Epo market in Abule, Lagos Mainland, was recently demolished by the government drawing condemnations from residents and concerned stakeholders.
