SARS Officer arrested for extorting fashion stylist in Ikorodu

An officer of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Inspector Charles Omotosho, attached to the Lagos State Police Command has been apprehended by the Command for extorting a fashion stylist in Ikorodu, Lagos Mainland. The officer was arrested after a Twitter user, Princess Ife shared her encounter with the operatives via her page.

In her post, Ife said she was arrested by the FSARS operatives and had to part with the sum of N5,000 (Five Thousand Naira) before she was released.

The victim who shared a snapshot of the internet transfer, tweeted saying; “With my encounter today, it’s safe to say SARS are armed robbers. Was going for a shoot in Ikorodu today & armed members of SARS pulled us over & made us pay for no reason. Threatening they were gon waste our lives. I made a transfer so they can be traced.”

Her post immediately drew the attention of social media users whose condemnations got the attention of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and Head of Police Public Complaints Rapid Response Unit, ACP Abayomi Shogunle.

In a swift response, ACP Shogunle stated that the Unit has acknowledged the complaints by the stylist adding that investigation has been initiated. This was just after he publicly shared a tracking number – #PCRRU316356 for the matter.

Meanwhile, less than 24 hours after the issue became public knowledge, the Police announced that the FSARS officer involved in the extortion has been arrested with preliminary investigation ongoing.

According to ACP Shogunle; “My Dearest @ife_luv12, I am glad to inform you that account owner has been identified – Inspector Charles Omotosho, FSARS Ikorodu, Lagos. He is under custody, preliminary investigation ongoing. PCRRU will inform you on next line of action. Sorry for the experience. #PCRRU316356.”

The development has however generated mixed reactions from social media users. While some users commend the Police for a swift action of the matter, others noted that the culprit must be thoroughly dealt with according to the law.
