Koola Lobito – #DukeOfSomolu

Koola Lobito is what I will call him today as he represents the vast majority of our people. We begin to ask ourselves why we are so backward as a people and you realise from very immediate thoughts that it is not very far from the fact that we have refused to be enlightened, to open up ourselves to new ways of thought.

So Koola glorifies in the fact that he did not go to school and as such his immediate environment must be kept within the abyss of ignorance wallowing in pedantic jokes and glorifying in the wanton absurdity of intellectual lack. So he sends me a missive 4:00 am and in it crackles in self-adulatory, in self-praise and in mock admonition. I really could not laugh but just shook my head at the absurdity that was unfolding in my head this early morning.

Koola Lobito was the name Fela gave his ill-fated band and when he saw that the name would get him nowhere, he changed it and became the maestro that he was thereby achieving the immortality he has attained. So for my Koola Lobito, let’s remain in the dark, we really would contribute to human history in the bottomless pit you have decided to live in. Na wa.

Wasn’t I lucky to sit in front of a former Chief of Naval Staff. Wasn’t I just truly lucky? The encounter was so astounding that I felt opened up. His logic, his soundness and his clear understanding of not only the military but the political environment left me amazed. His round explanation of the dynamism of the Nigerian climate begins to make you wonder as to why people like this would not partake in the political process. This was truly an officer and a gentleman and as he spoke, I felt my head opening up receiving wisdom and enlightenment. Would he join the political fray, he says no but will work from the back in ensuring credible people are better positioned.

In a conversation that evoked, Aristotle, Plato and other masters, I left there feeling schooled. What a dampener when I saw Koola’s post at 4:00 am in the morning bringing my head back to ground zero. He had accused me of name dropping. God, I just met the man……what a fool

Buhari is running again and Sowore is running; Fela is running a macabre dance of the Philistines. What next but to seat out this evolving tragi-comedy. Nigeria we hail thee.
