Apprehension as security guard kills LASPOTECH ‘student’ in Ikorodu

The atmosphere in the Ikorodu campus of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu, Lagos Mainland, is currently tensed as a result of the killing of a student, Ahmed Amoo, suspected to be a cultist by security guards attached to the school.

InsideMainland gathered that the incident which occurred on Tuesday, February 23, 2018, has thrown the entire Polytechnic community into palpable fear.

It was learnt that the victim, Amoo, who was a National Diploma student in the school was expelled five months ago for alleged cultism and examination malpractice.

Prior to the incident with the security guard, InsideMainland gathered that Amoo alongside his gang members stormed the school on Tuesday evening when the students of the department of Business Administration held the orientation exercise for the freshers in the department.

He was said to have robbed some of the students of their money, phones and other valuables before the incident was reported to the security men of the school.

A source said: “As the cultists were robbing the students, the security men were alerted and they rushed to the scene. When the robbers saw the security men, they fled but they were chased and two of them were arrested. The security men went after Amoo and they tried to disarm him. He was holding a battle axe and when he resisted, they shot him on the leg.

“He was eventually taken to Ikorodu General Hospital where he died. Some of the items they stole from the students were recovered.”

Speaking on the incident, the Public Relations officer of the school, Mr. Olanrewaju Kuye in an interview with NAN said: “Around 6:00 pm some hoodlums stormed the school to extort, kidnap and steal from students. Security men in the school were alerted and they stormed the scene.

“They chased the hoodlums up to the first gate of the school. On getting there, they realised there was another batch of hoodlums. There was an exchange of gunfire and one of the hoodlums was shot.

“He died Wednesday morning at the general hospital. He was discovered to be an expelled student of the school. Most of the hoodlums are rusticated students from the school.”

Presently, some students of the institution have taken a self-decision to stay at home to avoid being caught in the situation, if the victim’s gang decides to carry out a reprisal attack.

A student from the department of Computer Science told InsideMainland that “it is safer stay home for a while and allow things to settle properly than being caught in an unwanted situation.”

Commenting on the situation, a Senior Lecturer in the institution who craved anonymity said some classes held in the last two days had witnessed a fewer number of students attending the lectures. He, however, said the situation is currently been managed by the school management.
