A 40 year old trader, Mary Eze, has appeared before an Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrates’ court yesterday, December 29, 2017, for killing her seven-year-old son.
The accused was arraigned on a count of murder of which she pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The prosecuting officer, Insp. Chris Akpanomo, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on December 8, 2017, at No. 670, Ikorodu Road, Owode Elede, Lagos Mainland.
He said that Mary sent the deceased on an errand with the last N200 note she had, with the instruction to buy food for her, but he returned to tell her that he had misplaced the money.
According to Insp. Chris, the accused in anger poured hot water on her son afterwards she locked him up in her apartment and went out.
He added that it was the boy’s agonizing shouts that attracted neighbors who rushed him to the hospital where he later died.
Insp. Chris noted that the offence contravened Section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which stipulates a death sentence for convict.
However the presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Oluyemisi Adelaja ordered that the accused be remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons pending the outcome of legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions.
The case was then adjourned until January 24, 2018, for legal advice.
