42 passengers cheat death as BRT bursts into flames

Forty-two passengers yesterday, Tuesday, October 9, 2017 escaped death when a Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) conveying passangers from Lagos Island to Ikorodu, Lagos Mainland suddenly burst into flames. The incident was said to have occurred about 1pm at Aruna bus stop, Ikorodu, Lagos Mainland.

Witnesses said the driver observed that the engine was smoking from Agric bus stop and came down to inspect the engine; he assumed it was nothing serious, and then drove off.

Meanwhile, a few minutes later, there was a loud bang from the engine and the engine suddenly burst in flames. As fire engulfed the bus, the driver jumped out and screamed for help from passers-by.

Out of anxiety, passengers started screaming and attempted to jump from the bus and some passengers sustained injuries in the process. People were said to have come to their rescue from different directions with buckets of water to quench the fire.
