#MainlandSports: Agege Stadium to host the finals of Nigeria’s oldest cup competition

Football fans across Lagos Mainland and other parts of Lagos should gear up for a remarkable experience as the organizers of the annual Federation Cup – now Aiteo Cup – have announced that the Soccer Temple, Agege Stadium, will host this year’s edition of the finals.

The cup, which originally operates as the main football single-elimination tournament in Nigeria was created in 1945 as the ‘Governor’s Cup’ succeeding the War Memorial Challenge Cup that had been limited to teams from Lagos.

The finals of the cup, which is the oldest cup competition in Nigerian history, will take place on Sunday, October 15, 2017, in Agege, Lagos.

The event is expected to feature the final matches of the men and women games with top dignitaries, Football Association chairmen across Nigeria, sports administrators and other government functionaries in attendance.

Recall that the 4,000 capacity stadium has been the home ground of Lagos based, Nigerian Professional Football League side, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries Football Club, MFM FC, since the side won promotion to the top flight two seasons ago.

Meanwhile, the decision of the organizers of the Aiteo Cup has thrown fans of MFM FC into a joyous mood has the side gears up to compete in the CAF Champions League next season.

It is expected that hosting the finals of the Aiteo Cup in the stadium will help in the push for the club’s management to host continental matches in the stadium next season.
