Fake begger who make up to N8,000 per day arrested in Ikorodu

One, Abdullahi Abbas, who specializes in disguising as a beggar to trick residents in Ikorodu was arrested by security operatives yesterday, August 21, 2017.

The suspect who disguises as a visually impaired beggar, led by a 12-year-old boy (names withheld) usually begging for alms at First Gate and Odogunyan area of Ikorodu.

Luck ran out on the suspect after a curious female resident, Adeoye Baliks, who engaged the pair in a conversation, discovered the deception. Abdullahi and his aid were said to be well patronised in the axis until the curious resident raised the alarm, Vanguard reports.

According to reports, the suspect confessed he and his accomplice realise between N5,500 and N8,000 daily, depending on the patronage.

Upon several beatings by an angry mob who already gathered at the scene of discovery, the suspect confessed that he belonged to a team of beggars, who feigned visual impairment and operate in areas like Ikorodu, Oshodi, Iyana-ipaja and Abule-Egba.

It was gathered that the suspect was found with a bag containing an undisclosed amount of money, a substance usually rubbed on Abdulahi’s face to aid his disguise and a walking stick.

The discovery reportedly attracted a huge crowd who almost meted jungle justice on the suspect before the timely intervention of Ikorodu’s local vigilance team, Onyabo.

The suspect were later handed over to operatives at the Sagamu Road Division, Ikorodu.
