UNILAG research team discovers new technique for Malaria diagnosis.

Following intensive research carried out by the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) said it has invented a new method of diagnosing malaria.

This research development was founded by the Director, Research and Innovation of the institution, Prof. Wellington Oyibo on Thursday in Lagos. He said the university’s research on malaria testing would improve malaria diagnosis and treatment.

According to him, the institution in collaboration with a group of researchers in US provided a platform to diagnose malaria using urine samples that will provide solutions to life’s challenges, having discovered that malaria is a major health challenge in the country.

The groundbreaking and remarkable urine malaria test is the first clinical and global trial to be done in the world and the test had been registered by both the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration Control (NAFDAC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA).

He however appealed to the Federal Government to create easy access for people to test for malaria through the new approach and also by establishing testing centres in various parts of the country.
