Ahead of the forthcoming council elections in Lagos, the Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) Justice Ayotunde Phillips retd told InsideMainland that voters with Temporary Voter Card (TVC) will not be allowed to vote in the polls.
The LASIEC head made the disclosure during InsideMainland engagement programme, #InsideMainlandEngage.
According to Justice Ayotunde Phillips retd, “Voters should ensure they change their Temporary Voters Card (TVC) to Permanent Voters Card (PVC) at their various Local Government Areas or Local Council Development Areas to enable them vote in the polls.”
“Verification will be carried out manually using the Permanent Voters Card (PVC) and the voters register,” she added.
Responding to queries by stakeholders about LASIEC doing the bidding of political parties in the State, Justice Phillips retd disclosed that “that is not true at all. We are in the business of holding elections and not the bidding of self serving individuals or groups. We therefore refuse to be drawn into any intra-party disputes.”
She however disclosed that the commission monitored the political party primaries that presented candidates for the elections.
While stressing the readiness of LASIEC and its officers ahead of the elections, Justice Phillips retd stated that the officers have been warned to avoid being influenced by political parties and their agents.
“We have stressed constantly to our staff that acts of collusion will be sanctioned or tolerated. Any staff caught doing so will be dealt with to the full extent of the law,” she stated.
