Mainland Sports: MFM FC relinquish top spot in NPFL standings

Lagos based side, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries Football Club, MFM FC, surrendered the top position in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) standings to another top side, Plateau United FC of Jos, after the side lost by a goal to nil in Gombe.

The high-flying side tutored by Fidelis Ilechukwu lost to Gombe United FC in a feisty Match day 15 encounter played at the Pantami Township Stadium, Gombe State.

The Olukoya Boys as they are fondly referred among their darling fans went behind to a Sadiq Shuaibu 54th minute strike which proved enough for the home side to get maximum points.

MFM FC began the encounter on a high with good passage of the ball as they dominated the first part of the game. The visitors almost scored the opener after 10 minutes when Olatunbosun Sikiru’s pass couldn’t get to Onuwa Chukwuka who was well positioned few meters away from the homers box.

Moments later in the game, Gombe United had a chance to break the deadlock but Idris Bakare’s overhead kick went off target. The attacker had another goal opportunity in the 22nd minute when his effort at goal went off target.

The hosts were awarded a spot kick in the 32nd minute after an infringement on Manir Ubale. Austine Oladapo stepped forward sending the MFM FC goalkeeper, Folarin Abayomi the wrong way but his effort went wide.

Gombe United FC finally broke the gridlock in the 54th minute of the game courtesy of a strike from Sadiq Shuaibu who turned home a long throw-in from Idris Bakare.

Shortly after the opening goal, MFM FC combined well as Onuwa and Tchato Giscard asserted their authorities in the middle of the park with Stephen Odey and Olatunbosun Sikiru tormenting the hosts defense.

The Lagos-based side mounted pressure on the home team on many occasions but the hosts were resolute with their defending.

Stephen Odey attempted a long range shot in the 79th minute of the proceedings but his audacious effort went off target. The game ended in a 1-0 in favour of Gombe United FC.

MFM FC now occupies the second spot on the NPFL standings with 27 points from 15 league matches while Plateau United FC tops the lot with 28 points after the side defeated ABS FC 4-1, at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium, Jos.

In the encounter, Plateau United’s Reuben Bala scored a hat-trick after Joshua Obaje had opened scoring for the side. The consolatory goal for ABS FC was scored from an own-goal by Emmanuel Olowo of Plateau United while trying to defend a throw-in.
