As Lagos residents await the official announcement on the actual date for the council elections across the State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned Ikorodu residents on illegal registration of voters in the community.
InsideMainland gathered from residents that indeed, voters registration had commenced in some parts of the community.
A source who craved anonymity said “the exercise started at the ward level where party chieftains instructed their members to be part of the registration process to enable them elect officers in the forthcoming election. I also thought the process was regulated by INEC until I saw the press material where the Commission condemned the process.”
Cautioning Ikorodu residents on the illegal exercise, the Head of Publicity and Protocol of INEC in Lagos, Mr Femi Akinbiyi, in a statement obtained by InsideMainland said that the commission had not started registration of voters in any part of the state.
According to him “it has come to the notice of INEC that some unscrupulous elements in the society have been engaging in illegal registration of voters in Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State.”
He added that “for avoidance of doubt, the commission in the state has not commenced registration of voters in any part of the state.
Speaking further, Akinbiyi said “appropriate notice will be issued to the general public when the registration commences.”
Meanwhile, Akinbiyi who urged the public to report such illegal exercise to the Commission stated that law enforcement agencies had been informed of the development with a view to apprehending the criminals behind the illegal act.
You would also recall that the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) had urged residents across the State to collect their Permanent Voters Cards. The PVCs will enable registered voters cast their votes in the forthcoming elections.
