YemisiFancy’s #MyMainlandDiary: My Mainland Owambe party!

my mainland diary

I had a great week. Stress free I must confess that almost everyday of the week felt like weekend. During the course of the week, I had the chance to attend two tradition wedding parties which were absolutely amazing. I went for one of them with the mindset of enjoying all the moment and having the Owambe experience.

Here are five things to watch out for in order to have an amazing Owanbe experience.
1) The traditional attire (Aso Ebi)
2) The statement geles (Headgears)
3) The food
4) The groove
5) Party favors (souvenirs)

I arrived at the venue somewhere in Ikeja at about 1pm. I got into the hall and I was blown away by the ambience made heavenly by the décor. The crown it all the guests were so gorgeous , it was difficult to pick out the celebrant. I literally picked four styles I could rock within minutes of my entrance.

geleThe statement geles on the other hand are adorable. For the records, I love geles, I think they are simply glamorous, colorful and artistic; best way to spice up your outfit. The only problem is, I have never gotten to have them on longer than 30 minutes. I just take a few selfies with the gele on and yank to off.  It always feels like blood cannot flow freely with a Gele on my head. But I love them regardless!

So at the wedding, I saw some large geles. I wondered how heavy it was for the ladies wearing them. Yoruba women go all the way when it comes to these things.

As of the food, I’m the type that doesn’t eat much at weddings so that my tummy popping out of my outfit. LOL!. But the food at this wedding was delicious, and the dessert? Heavenly! I just couldn’t resist.

Now, have you ever wondered why so many souvenirs go round at the typical Owambe parties? I can’t answer that question either. sovenirs

This party has so much souvenirs the guests could really stock their entire kitchen up with them. I found all these so fascinating to watch.

Lastly, the groove was hot!! It was just like Banky W’s favourite lines.. ‘ain’t no party like a Lagos party.’ You will think that the newlyweds would be anxious to be done with the wedding, and go have some their own secluded fun. But not in this case; the couple kept dancing and I wondered where all the energy came from. I left the venue at about 8pm and the couple was still getting their groove on.

So if you haven’t been to a Lagos Owambe, I totally recommend that you do. It’s all shades of excitement. I’m glad I get to share my experience. It’s the weekend again, Let’s cheers to a fulfilling and fun filled weekend! TGIF (Thank God I’m Fancy).
