LASSA FEVER: Lagos records second death

The Lagos State commissioner of health Dr Jide Idris in a press briefing today Wednesday 27th January, 2016 confirmed another death by LASSA fever.

Dr Idris disclosed that the victim, a 27-year-old lady travelled to Edo state for a burial on December 24, 2015 and returned to Lagos on January 2, 2016.

She became ill on the14th of January, 2016 and received care in one private hospital and three churches before she was referred to Ijede General Hospital on the 23rd of January, 2016 with fever, vomiting, diarrhea and body weakness.

The patient later died few hours after she was admitted in Ijede General Hospital. The case was confirmed as Lassa fever on January 26, 2016.

The Commissioner said that 90 persons have been listed as contacts with the deceased as at 26th January, 2016 and contact tracing has already begun.

He also confirmed that so far, the state has recorded 20 suspected cases, out of which 14 tested negative, while 4 cases were confirmed positive. So far, 537 contacts have been listed, out of which 534 were currently under surveillance.
