The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of the Lagos State University (LASU) chapter today, March 17, 2015 disrupted the convocation ceremony at the school campus in Ojo, Lagos.
Addressing the press, Albert Agosu, Chairman of the Union, said, “the issue was borne out of the recklessness in the handling of official matters by the management, and for over three years now the University have been owing the staff. “We have had enough of his mismanagement and nonchalance. We just got an information this afternoon that we have been told to come to Alausa by the Lagos State Governor as I speak to you, we are on our way to see the governor, he called for us has he heard about the protest,” he explained.
A member of the union who pleaded for anonymity also buttressed the point raised by the Chairman. The source revealed that the attitude of the school’s management provoked the protest; “We have been telling the management for a very long time concerning our promotion and the arrears they are owing us. But just recently the management stated in a bulletin that promotion is not our right, that it’s only a privilege.
Another member of the union Comrade Ogunnoiki Adetokunbo, who was also spoke with the press said “there have been maladministration of the highest order. We have a VC, who came in through the back door. He sponsored the removal of another VC. He promised heaven and the goodness in it.
Meanwhile, the protest took a dramatic dimension when the protesting staff stoned the Vice Chancellor, Prof John Obafunwa and other principal officers with Sachet water continuously forcing the policemen and campus marshal to hurriedly escort him and others out of the area.
When the protest became tensed, because the situation was becoming uncontrollable, the policemen and the campus were forced to escort Obafunwa and other principal officers out of the campus through the Iba gate.
As Obafunwa and the principal officers made to escape the protesting workers wrath, more sachet water was thrown at his direction. He entered his official car at the other side of the road and was escorted by policemen.
The protesting staff after the VC exist stormed the offices of the Director, External System, Prof O.T.F. Abannikadan, Dean, Students of Affairs, Prof Kabir Akinyemi and one other Prof at the Science Department but met their absence.
Aside the VC, other principal officers chased out of the campus include, two of his deputies, Prof Sena Barkr and Prof Fedelis Njokuoma, Bursar and Librarian.
