The newly inaugurated Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has announced the arrest of 16 persons for indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorized places. The suspects were arrested on Monday, October 2, 2017 in various areas at Agege Motor Road, Oshodi, Mushin and Isolo between the hours of 4:30am and 6:00am.
According to the agency, the arrest was made during the operations carried out by its operatives across the state as part of the renewed efforts at sanitizing the environment.
In a statement released by the agency’s spokesperson, Mrs. Rahmat Alabi, and obtained by InsideMainland, the agency warned that no offender would be spared as they would be made to face the wrath of the law.
Mrs. Alabi disclosed that “night operations as part of the new strategies in carrying out the LAGESC duties was aimed at targeting and arresting people who are in the habit of dumping refuse all over the state especially at night and thereby causing serious environmental nuisances, despite on-going campaign against such illegal activities in the state.”
She added that: “In compliance with the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI), refuse bins have been provided and placed in all strategic places across the state for refuse dumping to bring absolute sanity to the state in consonance with global best practices.
“LAGESC have warned that anyone caught violating any provision of the Environmental Sanitation Laws as espoused in the ‘New Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Law 2017’ would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.”
