Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have apprehended five suspected armed robbers terrorizing Egbeda community in Lagos.
The suspects – Kehinde Jimoh, Ayomide Ibile, Musibau Gbadamosi, Ayodele Ojo and Rasheed Adekunle – were arrested by the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) around 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday while attempting to exit a petrol station at Abarenje area of Ikotun where they had gone to operate.
According to the Police, the SARS operatives acted on a tip-off about the operation of the robbers at the petrol station and caught them in the act.
However, when the suspects were paraded yesterday, Wednesday, September 6, 2017, they denied being robbers. The suspects argued they were mere security guards at the filling station.
According to one of the suspects, Kehinde Jimoh, they were at the filling station where they worked as security guards when the security operatives arrested them.
“I was at the petrol station security post sleeping when one of us called me to come out that someone was lurking around the station. When I came out about 3a.m., I confronted the man who told me he wanted to buy fuel and told him to wait till morning. I told him it was the fuel attendant that would attend to him”, he said.
“To my surprise, the man, who claimed he wanted to buy fuel went to the back of the petrol station and jumped into the station, opened the gate for his colleagues to come in and said that we were all under arrest. We never knew they were policemen. We are only working as guards and the guns we are using were given to us by our employer,” Jimoh added.
Another suspect, Gbadamosi, noted that the guns he gave to the guards were given to him by his late father and they were all registered. “I got the guns from my late father who was a vigilante before he died. I was surprised when the policemen came and arrested my boys. Even the divisional police officer of Igando is aware that we are using guns to guard,” he said.
Commenting on the arrest, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who paraded the suspects at the Police Officers Mess, Ikeja, said SARS men acted on the information about the robbery operation and arrested them in the act.
“We made a good success, by going after the suspects and they were arrested in the act. Four rifles and 42 live ammunition were recovered from them. They are undergoing investigation,” he said.
