The operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested two men for vandalism of the Ikeja Power Distribution Company (IKEDC) cables at Oshodi area of Lagos State.
The suspects, Remi Aina and Mayowa Adedoyin were arrested by the anti-vandal team of the NSCDC.
Speaking on the incident, the state NSCDC Commandant, Mr. Tajudeen Balogun, explained that the suspects were apprehended with the support of some residents in the community.
“The suspects went to vandalise the cables about 2a.m. when they thought most security agents had gone to bed. They forgot that we have our sources in communities and they give us information.
“Vandalism of cables is becoming rampart. If the suspects did not have buyers, they wouldn’t be in this sort of business. There is a marked increase in the vandalism of government property. This sort of action has plunged so many communities into darkness,” he said.
Upon interrogation, one of the suspects, Aina, denied his involvement in the allegation. “I was sleeping when the NSCDC operatives came to arrest me. I’m being framed over what I didn’t do,” he said.
Furthermore, Balogun said the NSCDC was working with cable marketers in the state to check vandalism. He disclosed that some of such marketers, who used to deal with cable vandals, had been arrested.
