A 42-year-old man, John Owobi, is currently cooling off in Police custody after he was apprehended for allegedly pummeling his wife, Theresa to death in their home located at 42 Musliu Street, Oko-Oba, Lagos.
According to reports, the suspect who told neighbours that his deceased wife drank insecticide which led to her death was exposed by his children.
The neigbours claimed to have heard the deceased, Theresa, shouting for help during the fight with her husband, Punch reports.
On getting to their flat to ascertain the cause of the shout, they reportedly met the lifeless body of Theresa on the ground.
Upon inquiry, Owobi told them his wife drank a bottle of insecticide, adding that he had once stopped her from taking the poisonous substance.
However, the most senior child of Owobi reportedly opened to the neighbours that his father killed his mother. He said their father beat her throughout the night and he later came to inform them that she drank poison and died.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the incident saying an autopsy report showed that the deceased died as a result of internal injuries sustained from severe beatings as well as trauma.
“The suspect went to the station to report that the deceased was found lying dead on the floor in their room. He claimed that his wife drank poison. But investigation revealed that he allegedly beat his wife to death.
“When she died, he told his children to say their mum took poison, if anyone asked. Investigation is still ongoing,” Famous-Cole said.
