Four persons have been confirmed dead in a deadly clash between scrap dealers and security operatives guiding pipelines in Ijegun axis of Lagos.
According to a report by News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the incident occurred yesterday, Monday, April 24 2017, after the armed security agents raided the camp of the dealers following a tip off that the dealers have been engaging in nefarious activities.
The raid further led to a free-for-all fight leading to the passing of four persons while some others sustained serious injuries.
One of the scavengers who simply identified himself as Ahmed, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the policemen have been coming there to disturb them.
“We don’t do anything here other than sell our scraps. And we settle them regularly whenever they come around. Now they came this morning and started trouble. We resisted and they started shooting thereby killing and injuring some of us,” he said.
Another victim who identified as Sanni said: “They killed four of our men. I am just coming from Isolo mortuary where I deposited the corpse of my brother. About 17 other people were injured,”
It was also gathered that the dealers set ablaze two Hilux patrol vans at the scene.
The injured ones in the chaos were taken to Eniola Hospital, Isheri-Osun while the dead bodies were deposited at Mainland General Hospital, Yaba.
The traditional ruler of Ijegun, Oba Nureni Akinremi, told NAN that policemen from Area ‘M’ Command were invited to repress the clash.
Confirming the clash, Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, said Police officers were deployed to the area to maintain law and order.
